Selective Engagements

Technical Advisory

I take on a small number of advisory engagements alongside my primary focus on full-time Director and VP of Engineering roles. The work is hands-on and specific: AI-native platform strategy, architecture and modernization reviews, M&A technical due diligence and integration, and engineering organization assessments. If you're working through one of those problems at the executive level, I'm worth a conversation.

Who I Work With

I work best with leadership teams at seed-through-growth-stage SaaS companies facing a specific inflection point: a planned AI platform investment, a recent acquisition to integrate, an engineering organization scaling past the point where informal processes still work, or a cloud modernization with real cost and performance stakes.

This is not general-purpose consulting work. I'm not a good fit for staff augmentation, role backfill, or broad "help us improve engineering" mandates without a defined problem at the center. The engagements that go well are ones where the leadership team has a clear question and wants senior engineering judgment applied to it.

Engagement Types

Why This Background Matters

The engagements above are grounded in work I've actually done — not adjacent experience, not advisory extrapolated from a single job. The full career record is on Rob's About page and Rob's resume. The short version: 25 years of engineering experience, the last decade in senior leadership at B2B SaaS companies, with a consistent track record of building teams and platforms that hold up at scale.

SaaS AI Platform Led to Beta

At SugarCRM, I directed the engineering teams that built and shipped a multi-tenant AI platform on AWS Bedrock — RAG pipelines, agent orchestration, and LLM observability — for a $100M+ SaaS CRM business. That platform went from concept to beta release under my leadership.

M&A Integration, Zero Customer Churn

I led the full technical integration of Salesfusion into SugarCRM — code repositories, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure, and team — in 12 weeks, completing 100% of integration milestones on schedule with no customer churn.

Engineering Organization Growth

I scaled the SugarCRM engineering organization by 150%, building five teams across AI/ML, Data Platform, and Identity Management — and promoted 8 engineers into senior and staff roles and 3 into engineering management during that same period.

Engineering Retention Through Scale

Across that 150% growth period at SugarCRM — which included an M&A consolidation — I sustained 90% engineering retention. That number reflects deliberate investment in career development, clear communication through ambiguity, and team structures people wanted to stay in.

How It Works

  1. Reach Out

Send a note through the contact form with a brief description of what you're working through. I read every message and respond personally — usually within a few business days.

  2. 30-Minute Scoping Call (Free)

If the problem sounds like a fit, I'll schedule a 30-minute call to understand the situation in more depth and confirm whether there's a real engagement here. No commitment on either side.

  3. Written Proposal

If we both want to move forward, I'll put scope, cadence, and terms in writing before any work begins. No ambiguity about what's included, what the deliverable is, or how long it runs.
